Résumé: Conservators and conservation scientists have applied a large (and steadily increasing) number of instrumental analysis methods to the examination of ancient and historic glass works of art. These methods have been used to answer questions about the condition, provenance and fabrication technology of glass objects that date from the third millennium BC to the nineteenth century AD. The principles and practical considerations of sixteen of the most commonly used instrumental methods of analysis are discussed here. These methods are grouped as electron beam methods, X-ray methods, particle methods, optical spectrometric methods, mass spectrometric methods and oxidation state methods. The surface compositions of ancient and historic glasses differ substantially from their bulk compositions (due to alkali leaching processes), and the consequences of this inhomogeneity for the technical examination of these glasses are discussed here. Examples of current applications of the analytical methods to ancient and historic glass research are provided, as are the limitations encountered when using these methods in this field of study (Résumé de l'auteur)
