Résumé: L’Antiquité à la BnF. Chronologically speaking, the first photographic portrait of Flaubert was, until now, the one taken by Maxime Du Camp on January 9, 1850, in Egypt, in Cairo, in the gardens of the Hotel du Nil. This full-length portrait, in which Flaubert appears at the bottom of the photograph in Nubian costume, in profile, with his head bowed and looking somewhat uncertain, is all the more famous because Maxime Du Camp selected it for inclusion in the 125 plates of his work Egypt, Nubia, Palestine, and Syria, bound in two volumes, printed by Blanquart-Évrard, and published by Gide and J. Baudry in 1852. We must now revisit this chronology of photographic representations of Gustave Flaubert in light of recent analyses of Maxime Du Camp's paper negatives preserved at the Institut de France. In this article, we wish to clarify the circumstances surrounding the discovery of two new photographs featuring the famous writer, also taken by his friend Maxime Du Camp during their long journey through Egypt, one in December 1849 and the other in April 1850. . Sur un plan chronologique, le premier portrait photographique de Flaubert était jusqu’à présent celui que réalise Maxime Du Camp le 9 janvier 1850 en Égypte, au Caire dans les jardins de l’hôtel du Nil. Ce portrait en pied, pour lequel Flaubert apparait en bas de la photographie en costume de nubien, de profil, la tête basse et à l’allure peu assurée, est d’autant plus connu que Maxime Du Camp le sélectionne pour intégrer les 125 planches de son ouvrage Égypte, Nubie, Palestine et Syrie relié en deux volumes, imprimé par Blanquart-Évrard et édité par Gide et J. Baudry en 18523. Il faut désormais revoir cette chronologie des représentations photographiques de Gustave Flaubert, à la lumière de récentes analyses des négatifs sur papier de Maxime Du Camp conservés à l’Institut de France. Dans le présent article, nous souhaitons ainsi clarifier les circonstances de la découverte de deux nouveaux clichés sur lesquels apparaît le célèbre écrivain, réalisés également par son ami Maxime Du Camp durant leur long périple égyptien, l’un en décembre 1849 et l’autre en avril 1850.
