Résumé: In the frame of the German-French Research Program the weathering and conservation of tuffeau were studied since summer 1995. important stone parameters were determined on original material in the laboratory. The biaxial flexural strength, the hygric dilatation, the capillary water uptake, the water vapour diffusion resistance and the ultrasonic velocity were measured. In a second step the material was treated with commercial and newly developed consolidants under laboratory condidions. The influence of the respective treatments on the investigated stone parameters was studied. In September 1996 the consolidative agents were applied on test areas in the Cloitre de la Psalette of St. Gatien. The efficiency of the consolidation was checked in November 1996 by measurements of ultrasonic velocity and drilling resistance. Drill cores were taken for further laboratory investigations. The special weathering behaviour of tuffeau stone, especially the formation of a deep and extended crumbling zone under the surface is responsible for decisive difficulties for an effective and durable conservation (résumé de l'auteur).
