The voices of children in Notre-Dame de Paris during the Late Middle Ages and the Modern Period

This article presents aspects of the lives of the choirboys at Notre-Dame de Paris between the 14th and the 18th centuries. We evaluate the sound produced by children’s voices during liturgical celebrations based on their location inside the choir using acoustic simulations. The enclosed liturgical choir of Notre-Dame created an acoustical subspace in the cathedral with suitable acoustics for the clergy within the choir, but not for the laypeople in the nave. These simulations demonstrate that this liturgy of the Hours was meant mostly for God and the canons who sang it. In addition to testing conditions where the children sang from within the chancel with and without the jubé, we also investigate the situation where the children sang from on top of the jubé as they did for certain special occasions. While placing singers on the jubé may have had visual appeal or ceremonial importance, simulations reveal that moving the singers from the ground floor of the choir to the jubé would have actually had a negative effect on the loudness and clarity of the sound heard by the canons in the choir.

Ears of the past, an inquiry into the sonic memory of the acoustics of Notre-Dame before the fire of 2019

This interdisciplinary study brings together acousticians and anthropologists to examine the memory of the acoustics of Notre-Dame de Paris before the fire of April 2019, using a qualitative approach to collect the testimonies of 18 people involved in the sound usages of the cathedral. Testimonies were analyzed in light of research conducted in the anthropology of the senses, sensory perception, memory, and cultural heritage. Analysis highlights an apparent contradiction between the remarkable acoustics of the monument before the fire and the impression of musicians. These musicians reported a struggle to tame the cathedral’s sound space, to hear each other well enough to craft their performances and to reach an acceptable level of clarity in their musical practice. These phenomena are examined with acoustic measurements and numerical simulations using a calibrated geometrical acoustics model of the cathedral before the fire, which allows for an objective exploration of the acoustic characteristics of Notre-Dame. This analysis concludes that the well-known reverberation of Notre-Dame, as well as the acoustic barrier of the transept and the poor acoustic return on the podium (the usual place for concert performers) negatively impact singers’ comfort. This highlights the tension between the original architectural design of the cathedral and its modern religious and cultural usages. However, the regular occupants have developed a deep familiarity with these constraints during their ritual and musical practices, adjusting to the acoustics in a unique way. Such a tradition of adaptation must be considered as a part of cultural practice, not to be overlooked during the reconstruction.

A digital ecosystem for the multidisciplinary study of Notre-Dame de Paris

The 2019 fire of Notre-Dame de Paris was not only a significant event in its history, but also provided a unique platform for multidisciplinary studies and digital data analysis. At the initiative of the CNRS and the Ministry of Culture, a large-scale collaboration is currently underway to manage and analyse the extensive data generated in connection with the restoration of the cathedral. The role of digital data is crucial for understanding complex multidisciplinary studies, especially in the field of cultural heritage. A digital data working group, composed of thirty scientists from 12 laboratories, is focused on documenting and organising this collective experience to serve both the immediate needs of restoration and the long-term goals of cultural heritage research. Key challenges include data traceability, knowledge modelling, multidimensional analysis and the need to address gaps in semantic understanding, memory, data correlation and technology. To address these challenges, a novel method is proposed that combines the digital representation of material heritage with the evolving knowledge about it. By collaborating with the wider scholarly community involved in Notre Dame's scientific action, the aim is to introduce new methods in heritage research and bridge the gap between the humanities and digitally-driven scholarship. This initiative also intersects with two primary scientific vectors: the technological approach to data collection and the generation and analysis of semantically enriched datasets.

A digital platform for the centralization and long-term preservation of multidisciplinary scientific data belonging to the Notre Dame de Paris scientific action

This article explores the design, development and deployment of a digital platform for scholarly work at Notre Dame Cathedral and demonstrates the transformative impact of digital technology on heritage disciplines. By merging technology and human expertise, the platform facilitates the creation, integration, sharing, and analysis of extensive scientific data on the multidisciplinary post-fire study of the cathedral. This multi-layered approach includes community building for collaborative efforts, digital tools tailored to different stakeholders, data structuring approaches for managing multidimensional features, and experience-based workflows for documenting, categorising and semantically enriching scientific and restoration data. The overall goal is to introduce an integrated solution for collaborative studies and to promote a digital memory of the collective initiative in accordance with the principles of FAIR for scientific heritage data. This initiative not only supports the research and restoration of Notre Dame, but also serves as a paradigm for future conservation and documentation efforts in the field of cultural heritage.

Historical monuments and lead pollution: Lessons from the case of Notre-Dame de Paris and Sainte-Chapelle

To investigate the potential spreading of leaded dust over Paris and its inhabitants, following the fire of Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in April 2019, we developed a dedicated protocol to identify the geochemical fingerprint of the emitted particles. This method could be transposed to a contemporary monument to Notre-Dame de Paris which had not burnt and which had to undergo a major restoration phase: Sainte-Chapelle de Paris. Thus, a new study was performed on the indoor dust collected in this monument, to which the protocol developed for the dusts of Notre-Dame was applied. The comparison of the geochemical fingerprint of both monuments highlights the complexity of establishing the chemical signatures of such buildings. The homogeneity of the isotopic and elemental results obtained on the samples from Notre-Dame de Paris compared to those from Sainte-Chapelle de Paris reveals the homogenizing role of the fire, which simplifies the geochemical signature determination. Moreover, this study does not show any significant impact of anthropogenic pollution (road traffic, industry, incinerators) on the indoor environment of monuments, which are nevertheless rich in construction lead. The notion of “polluter-polluted monument" could be problematic in the event of an accident during restoration phase. These new results obtained on dust samples from a building that has not experienced any recent major deterioration underlines the multiple sources of lead present in these monuments and the importance of identifying univocally their signature. However, the concentrations of metal and metalloid in the indoor dust do not show any major pollution inside Sainte-Chapelle de Paris that could be a threat to human health.

The tragic fire of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on April 15th 2019 has provided researchers with a wide variety of materials to study. The condition of the framework remains does not allow any reuse, which creates an unprecedented opportunity to study the charred pieces of the frame: about 10,000 for the highest estimates. But upstream from the wooden items study, an inventory is required to establish methods that are consistent with the potential of the charred remains of the cathedral's framework. The purpose of this article is therefore to present the problems raised, the methods applied, the potential of the remains of the n-dame's frame - so called the "forest" - and the first results.
